Collection of 38 Case Studies on Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Now Available on the WaterWiki

A suite of 38 CAPS case studies on decentralized wastewater treatment solutions from sanitation projects in Cambodia, Lao, Vietnam and Philippines is now available on the WaterWiki.

These studies were produced by CAPS for UNEP with funding by KOICA.

The Centre for Advanced Philippine Studies (CAPS) is a research and development foundation established in 1987.

CAPS is engaged in innovative urban environmental management researches and projects most especially in the field integrated sustainable waste management (ISWM) and sustainable sanitation in relation to poverty alleviation.

Julian Doczi, now an MSc student at the University of East Anglia, worked with CAPS on creating the studies and explains that:

“These case studies were a part of a larger CAPS project on putting decentralized/ecological sanitation into practice that was prepared for UNEP and funded by KOICA. In addition to preparing these case studies on existing successful decentralized/ecological sanitation projects in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Philippines, the project also involved a) working with a rural Philippine community to install new EcoSan toilets, b) working with another rural community to install a community-based DEWATS, and c) working with the local government of this area to undertake a trials of 'closing the loop' between urban sanitation outputs and rural agricultural needs.”

With a project of this size it was important that the material was made accessible to users in an organized and straightforward way, that related studies could be easily linked together and that there were clear indexes which allowed material to be found quickly.

Case studies are grouped by geographical location – with each featured country having its own index page.
